Travel PR is a good gig. We get to talk about fantastic products, in beautiful destinations across the globe – it’s not exactly a hard-sell. However, it comes with the challenge of authentically conveying the essence of these products – many times without having the pleasure of experiencing them first hand.
For almost two years, we’ve been representing Cruise Croatia, passionately promoting their offerings without ever stepping foot on one of their vessels. This all changed recently when I was lucky enough to cruise onboard MS My Wish, a 38-guest yacht, sailing from Dubrovnik to Split.
This first-hand experience has hugely benefited my approach to PR’ing Cruise Croatia and reinforced the irreplaceable value of personal experience in travel PR.
Immersive understanding
Before my cruise, my knowledge was built on second-hand accounts, brochures, marketing copy and online reviews. While incredibly informative, these sources can’t capture the nuances of an actual sailing. Being onboard allowed me to immerse myself in the experience – diving into the warm Adriatic Sea, the camaraderie among travellers and the exceptional service provided by the crew. This direct exposure enabled me to understand and appreciate the subtle details that make up the USPs.
Authentic storytelling
Authenticity is the cornerstone of effective travel PR. My sailing, taking in major ports such as Dubrovnik and Split, in amongst lesser-known stops like Korčula and Trogir, has provided me with a host of genuine anecdotes and insights. I can now vividly describe sampling fresh oysters from the family run farm, the views of local children swimming as the sun sets – you get the idea. These personal stories add depth and credibility when pitching stories and writing press releases, in turn resonating more with potential passengers.
Genuine passion
Representing a travel company is far more compelling when fuelled by genuine passion. I am no longer just a spokesperson for Cruise Croatia but an advocate, eager to share an enthusiasm that only comes from personal experience.
Enhanced knowledge
My cruise has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the logistical elements of a Cruise Croatia voyage. I am now better placed to address enquiries, offer tailored advice and highlight unique selling points. This enhanced expertise allows me to provide more accurate information to both media outlets and prospective travellers.
In travel PR, nothing can substitute the impact of personal experience. My journey on MS My Wish has hugely improved my ability to promote Cruise Croatia, enabling me to share the magic of their cruises with authenticity, passion and authority.
For those in the travel industry, investing in first-hand experiences is not just beneficial, it is essential for delivering compelling, persuasive PR narratives.
